“Taclim” Upgraded and Redesigned – Haptically Realize VR Worlds with Your Whole Body

8th January, 2018 –

“Taclim” Upgraded and Redesigned –
Haptically Realize VR Worlds with Your Whole Body

-Now bundled with a development kit to easily create original VR controllers -

Cerevo Inc., an Internet connected consumer electronics manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, announces an upgraded and redesigned Taclim, with a concept focusing on haptic experiences.

Taclim, the world’s first VR shoes and gloves with built-in tactile devices for haptic feedback, was unveiled at last year’s CES. A new almost-final prototype will be exhibited at CES 2018 which runs from 9th to 12nd January 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The new Taclim is scheduled to be available for purchase in mid 2018.

Taclim
https://taclim.cerevo.com/

Taclim is a set of VR shoes and a customizable module capable of detecting user movements as input and translating in-VR action to real world haptic output, adding a new dimension to existing VR spaces which are mainly focused on visual and aural experiences. Cerevo has skillfully developed customized tactile devices enabling haptic feedback for the user’s hands and feet according to images and sounds in a VR space, allowing users to become more engrossed in the action. The built-in tactile devices can freely change the strength of feedback, so a sense of stepping on different ground in a VR space such as desert, grassland, water and more can be achieved with Taclim.

While Cerevo announced this product at CES in January 2017, because of continuous development throughout the year as well as findings gained and feedback received from many industry stakeholders and public audiences, Cerevo has made major improvements to the product and focused on a new concept for Taclim heading towards its release in mid 2018.
Since the time of the product announcement last year, the VR glove part has been modularized as the “Taclim Module” allowing it to be integrated or attached to other products.

Taclim Module is a feedback module with built-in Wi-Fi, a 9-axis sensor and tactile motors. The Taclim Module can be integrated into other hardware making it easy to develop a dedicated VR controller that can generate tactile feedback tailored to specific content. Using Taclim Module, device manufacturers can easily produce new VR controllers utilizing tactile feedback and develop VR content beyond what is possible when using existing controllers.

The Taclim Module is divided into a communication unit equipped with an acceleration sensor and a tactile unit, it is also possible to use multiple units together. In addition to having a Taclim Module in each hand, attaching it to a waist, back, weapons, armor, tools, etc., you can greatly enhance tactile feedback sensations over a players’ whole body.

The communication unit and the tactile unit are connected by a cable, and you can extend the length of the cable by replacing it with a commercially available extension cable. In addition, GPIO terminals are available for connection with external sensors, making it possible to use Taclim by utilizing information acquired from GPIO compatible switches and sensors.

For example, in addition to the original specification of reproducing tactile sensations when holding Taclim Module in your hand, by attaching the Module’s tactile unit to a steering wheel attachment, the feedback of the road surface and engine vibration when driving can be felt, or by attaching it to a gun type attachment you can reproduce the recoil effect of firing a gun. In addition, with GPIO you can expand the world of haptic feedback, such as enabling vibration and recoil according to the timing of pulling a gun trigger.

The VR shoes have also been significantly redesigned, and a physical foot switch has been mounted on the back of the foot. By combining with the existing 9-axis sensors, the accuracy of walking has been greatly improved. Parts of the heel can be exchanged, and by attaching a third-party tracker such as HTC’s “VIVE Tracker”, a room scale VR space can utilize actual movement.

Cerevo adopted the customized tactile devices inside Taclim in collaboration with Nidec Seimitsu Corp. By installing tactile devices on the instep part in addition to the sole of the shoe, the shoe part reproduces not only the feel of touch when walking but also the feeling on the instep of the foot when kicking an object.

The development environment for Taclim is provided as a Unity plug-in, allowing developers to freely develop content using Taclim as an input/output device. You can also create your own tactile data by defining basic haptic feedback as sample data, or by importing files in WAV format. In addition to being able to freely create tactile data with sound editing software, Cerevo also offers a dedicated software application for creating tactile data.
At CES 2018, Taclim’s redesigned final prototype and a gun type controller with Taclim Module built-in will be displayed. You can experience tactile feedback of multiple weapons such as machine guns, flamethrowers, or laser guns with a single device.

Also, Cerevo will demonstrate an alpha version of a VR game “Taclim Block”, newly created for Taclim and developed by Synamon Inc. In the demo you can walk around the VR space freely and at the same time can feel the feedback that is transmitted through the tactile devices.

Announcing “Qvie”- a Mobile, Cashless, Minimal Private Vending Box

8th January, 2018 (PST) –

Announcing “Qvie”- a Mobile, Cashless, Minimal Private Vending Box
– Owners need no power supply or dedicated internet connection to operate the box
Users can purchase products inside without cash  –

Cerevo Inc., an Internet connected consumer electronics manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, announces “Qvie”, a minimal, connected, cashless private vending machine with 4G/3G connectivity. Owning Qvie allows you to instantly make your own shop and sell what you want, anywhere.

Cerevo has developed Qvie so an extra value and revenue can be added to the growing number of sharing economy businesses such as leasing or renting short-term lodgings, room sharing, car sharing and so on. Qvie’s prototypes will be exhibited at CES 2018 which runs from 9th to 12nd January 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and it is scheduled to be available for purchase in mid 2018.

Qvie
https://qvie.cerevo.com/

Qvie consists of an individually designed cargo unit where products will be stored and a head unit with an e-paper display which is for a payment settlement. When users and guests tap their mobile payment app on their smartphone, Qvie’s door automatically opens and users can take the products inside.

It requires no power supply nor complicated set up of a dedicated network connection thanks to its lithium-ion battery for both the cargo unit and head unit that operates the electric door, and its own 4G/3G connectivity. Qvie will run for 1 month on battery power alone once the battery is charged so owners do not have to worry about a power supply or network connection.

One head unit can manage multiple cargo units, so owners can create their own vending machines as they like according to available space and product type.

Qvie doesn’t require a shopkeeper to be present to take payments. Currently Qvie supports mobile payment services using QR codes, as well as other major mobile payment services which don’t require a QR code. Users can purchase products inside Qvie as long as they are using an eligible mobile payment service and don’t need a service subscription. Qvie owners can manage information such as the number, duration, and frequency of door openings, when products were sold, how many were sold, and so on., through their smartphone in real-time, so quick stock replenishment is possible (*)

For example, a Qvie owner can place it in their Airbnb rooms as a value-added service for their guests. In the cargo space you can sell things that guests want to get quickly in daily life wherever they are, snacks, beverages, T-shirts, mobile chargers, etc., can all easily fit inside and be safely stored. The owner’s setup is quick and simple, just enter the price and detailed information of the products inside Qvie via the dedicated website control panel, the door of the cargo unit will lock and then be ready to accept sales.

Qvie was developed by combining ideas and technology innovation to lower operational hurdles such as payment in cash, physical product delivery and inventory that are associated with existing C2C business such as the sharing economy (Airbnb and others), traditional flea markets and local tourist specialties. Cerevo aims to contribute to C2C business expansion with Qvie.

.(*) The monthly fee/cost structure has not been decided as the product is still in development.

Unveiling “1/1 scale ELUCIDATOR”, an Authentic, Voice Activated, Smart One-handed Sword from the anime “SWORD ART ONLINE”

8th January 2018 (PST) –

Unveiling “1/1 scale ELUCIDATOR”, an Authentic, Voice Activated,
Smart One-handed Sword
from the anime “SWORD ART ONLINE”

Cerevo Inc., an Internet connected consumer electronics manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, announces that it has developed an officially licensed smart toy “1/1 scale ELUCIDATOR”, which faithfully reproduces the one-handed sword appearing in the hit anime “SWORD ART ONLINE”. Prototypes will be exhibited at CES 2018 which runs from 9th to 12nd January 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. ELUCIDATOR is scheduled to be available for purchase in mid 2018.

1/1 ELUCIDATOR
https://sao.cerevo.com/en/elucidator/

Cerevo’s ongoing project “S2R (From screen to the real world)” creates unique, real world connected versions of objects and devices that appear in animation, games, movies and other media. “ELUCIDATOR” represents the next phase of S2R products developed by Cerevo.

Cerevo focused on popular swords in the fictitious world of animation and movies to develop the “BLADEM (connected BLAde Development and Evaluation Module)” platform, which can reproduce, as a smart toy, swords appearing in various works. As the first product from the BLADEM platform, Cerevo developed an authentic 1/1 reproduction of the one-handed sword “Elucidator” wielded by the main character, Kirito from Sword Art Online. As well as exactly reproducing the appearance of the sword, dazzling light is emitted when the owner wields the blade. 1/1 ELUCIDATOR also uses additional leading-edge technology, such as voice recognition and motion detection to draw you into the original world.

The entire surface of the sword is covered with over 2,000 high brightness, full color LEDs to reproduce the dazzling and brilliant blade from the animation. An internal 6-axis sensor (acceleration, angular velocity) detects sword movement as the sword shines and emits sounds from the built-in speaker according to how it is wielded and swung. The speakers are audible not only to the user but also to the surrounding audience. The LEDs are controlled independently by multiple lighting drivers, so not only does the whole blade glow, but also light can flow from the hilt towards the cutting edge.

You can activate effects such as “Starburst Stream”, one of Kirito’s sword skills, and change the way the sword shines and sounds. When specific action is taken by the user, the sound effects of “Starburst Stream” are continuously emitted according to movement and with the last swing, sounds of enemies being defeated can be heard. You can experience the feeling of wielding the blade, with vocalization, movement, and sound interacting, far beyond what is possible with normal toys.

Various settings can be changed from a connected smartphone (via Wi-Fi). Sound effects linked to sword movements can also be played from smartphones. Switching the speaker output to your smartphone and further connecting to an external speaker makes it possible to produce loud sounds from the sword even in places where the surroundings are noisy, like cosplay events.

Cerevo plans on producing a series of smart toys which adopt the BLADEM platform in the future, Cerevo will also welcome consultation requests for product development using BLADEM. Basic functions such as smartphone connectivity and a 6-axis sensor can be integrated, customization such as changing LED configurations according to the world view of individual original titles or mounting a touch sensor are also possible.
